MWR Trading Card 84 – Bruiser Brody

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 2, 2012

Bruiser Brody, say the name to anyone involved in wrestling around the world past or present and there are many different emotions involved with each person. Brody was a hero to many, a rebel to others and seen as an enemy to many that wanted to control him.

If Hulk Hogan was the most popular, if Ric Flair was the greatest then Brody very the master of providing fear in not only the fans but the wrestlers themselves. A man who stood up for what he believed in Brody as wrestling was heading to the cartoon world of “Sports entertainment”. Brody continued the legacy of pro wrestling as a brutal, exciting and often bloody contest. Standing 6’8″ while weighing 325 pounds Brody demanded respect as an athlete first and foremost.

Brody’s tours of Japan cemented him as a legend while his battles with the best of the best including the likes of Andre the Giant, Bruno Sammartino, Dusty Rhodes, Abdullah the Butcher and Antonio Inoki .

Brody was an instant draw for promoters for over 13 plus years including being a former NWA Central States Champion by defeating “Bulldog” Bob Brown April 10, 1980 Kansas City, KS and drew  huge houses in St. Louis for Sam Muchnick’s NWA.

PWI ranked him #14 of the 500 best singles wrestlers of the “PWI Years” in 2003. Brody was inducted into the St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame Class in 2007. Other awards included with the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards 5 Star Match (1984) with Stan Hansen vs. Dory and Terry Funk on December 8, Best Brawler (1980–1984, 1987, 1988), Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame (Class of 1996).

Before ECW, Brody could wrestle with the best of them, was the king of hardcore and truly underrated with his promo skills.

This card is the effort and work of three wonderful people Barbara Goodish, Larry Matysik, and Rob Schamberger.

While the men and women that I personally would dream of having in the MWR set from the start included Harley Race, Ric Flair, MsChif and Bruiser Brody I could not possibly do it without the permission of his wife Barbara Goodish.

Barbara Goodish- While myself and the fans lost a favorite wrestler during the tragic events in Puerto Rico during Frank “Bruiser Brody” Goodish murder, the hard part was that a family lost a loving husband, father and friend. When I picked up the book Brody: The Triumph and Tragedy of Wrestling’s Rebel, I have to be honest I was skeptical how interested I would be when I saw that she would be sharing the story with Larry Matysik. When the final page was turned I felt ashamed of myself for feeling that way as Goodish brought out the reality of the situation. You got to see the real side of the man Bruiser Brody the man inside. I knew I couldn’t just make a card and money out of Brody without the blessing of the love of his wife. I am honored that Barbara gave us her permission to do a card to honor her husband for our card set.

Larry Matysik- The voice of Wrestling at the Chase is loved and respected not only in St. Louis but around the country. The right hand man of NWA President Sam Muchnick was instrumental to making ST. Louis the heart of the sport. It would only be proper that Brody’s friend and author of his autobiography to do the Bruiser Brody MWR Trading card.

Rob Schamberger- The card also features not only one but two photos of Brody from the hottest wrestling artist in the country Rob Schamberger. Schamberger like myself is a huge fan of Brody and stated that “I could draw Bruiser Brody all day long every day, if things went incredibly right in my life! There’s something about his energy, his intensity, his overall wildman look, that makes him a thrill to portray.”

This card is a must have for any fan of Bruiser Brody fan and it can be yours for only $3.00.

They are two of the biggest men in the Midwest, and fans in the MWR coverage area have seen the Lumberjacks in the past pounding on the likes of arch rivals The Big Texan and Waco in the ring.

Recently the brother duo of Abe and Gabe took the time to use their hearts to meet the children of the annual MDA camp in St Louis. The 2012 theme was “Season of Hope”.

MDA Camp counselor Ellen Turner was kind enough to speak with us on the yearly program. She stated “ I have been working with the MDA going on 6 years now, the children are AMAZING. They make me laugh, they make me cry their truly my hero’s. While there is research going on to seek better treatments and cures for the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases, the camps allow the children a week to get attend to make new friends, catch up with old ones while having a fun filled week.

This year was another great year even with 103 degrees, the kids were happy to be there, during the week dinner was brought in from several sponsors including Texas Roadhouse, Lowes and a BBQ from Weber Chevrolet. Each day had a different them filled with various activities including a masquerade ball, and dances. “

Turner went on to say “ When you go home from seeing the event and how strong these children are as they go through their adversity of MDA it makes you realize how little some of our day to day troubles are.

When asked about the Lumberjacks Abe and Gabe, Turner replied they stayed from 1-4 and were wonderful with the children. We hope that they return next year to take part of the 2013 MDA camp.”

Lumberjack Abe stated “That the day was so rewarding being able to meet the children of the camp. You see these children who are suffering from Multiple Sclerosis at the camp and you would never know it as they are having the time of their lives with activities such as swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts fishing, campfires and much more while working with the councilors and fellow campers.

Abe went on to say that “My brother and I were so honored when one of the children told us that his dad was a wrestling fan and wanted to have our autographs to surprise his dad when he came was going to give it to dad when he came to pick him up at the week. “

Both Abe and Gabe spoke on how they look to come back next year to meet the children in 2012, and hope to bring some other fellow wrestlers to the camp. The children  also met several other  heroes throughout the week such as firemen who offered the kids rides on a fire truck, the St Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird comes to visits as does The Gateway Grizzlies Izzy, just to name a few.

KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis covered the event here.

INTERVIEW — EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, JUSTIN CLARK (PART ONE)

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 2, 2012

Interview by Amber Wagner

Barely paying attention to the conversation, buried in his phone (which is usually his style), Executive Producer of New Midwest Wrestling Events, Justin Clark sat across the table from me. He’d been asked for weeks to do an interview for the site, but was hard to get one-on-one. With New Midwest Wrestling’s BLINDSIDE two months away (August 25th), he told me that he was trying to get the ball rolling as far as preparation goes. But he had a free hour and was able to grant this exclusive interview. I was shocked to see how open he was regarding New Midwest Wrestling business and the controversial air that seemed to loom.

AW: So, let’s start off with the obvious elephant in the room, the Tommy Arson situation. Arson and LPC seemed to pull a fast one on the matchmakers, most importantly you, and keep Arson’s involvement in the New Midwest Wrestling Championship Ladder Match a secret until they literally stole the title as a coup for the members of the Sovereign plan. Where do you stand with the ruling made that Arson is now Champion?

JC: I said it before, I’ve got egg on my face. I wasn’t paying attention to what was right under my nose. Arson was indeed signed in that match. I’m paying for it; trust me. But I’ve learned from it, and it cannot happen again.

AW: A few people have made claims that it seems that anyone can do what they want in certain matches. For example, the next ladder match New Midwest has, ANYONE can run up the ladder and win. And what happened last month is evident of that.

JC: But as I said, Arson was signed for that match. There are no contracts for this level of wrestling for the participants to assign. They just have to verbally accept to the terms laid out by the official, in this case LPC, and then that official does the paperwork on it. All CoTrane told anyone was that the first man to come down with the championship was the winner. He’s smarter than he looks sometimes.
